Belt Sander Drag Race
Buckland Volunteer Fire Dept. held it's Inaugural Belt Sander Drag
Race, Saturday, June 22nd, 2002. This race was Co-Sponsored by "Cotner's
Hardware located in Wapakoneta. The race was a success. Although only 14 belt
sanders were entered and participated in the race, everyone had a great time, including
both the racers and spectators.
Many had showed up having never heard of such an event. Many stared in dis-belief as
the racers readied their machines for the race. As the switch was thrown for the
fist race in the first event, everybody watched intently not knowing what to expect.
The two sanders came to life and went streaking down the 30' racing surface, each clawing
at the newly built track to achieve it's top possible speed. The spectators looks of
dis-belief soon turned to smiles and laughter as they watched this event.
Of the 14 racers and their sanders, 9 raced in the "Stock" class, 2 in the
"Super Stock" class, and 3 in the "Modified" class. In the end,
one sander from each class had clawed it's way to the top. Trophies were presented
to the winner of each class, as well as a trophy being presented to the sander that had
been judged Best of Show.
