Belt Sander Drag Racing

General Rules

Entry Fee:  There will be a $5.00 entry fee for each belt sander in each class it is raced.

Racing:

- Racing is conducted on a double elimination basis.

- Individual track assignments and pairing shall be made at each race on the basis of a drawing.

- Belt sanders can be entered in either or both classes as long as they qualify for that class's rules.

- Participants racing multiple sanders may only race one belt sander in each class.  (If you bring two or more belt sanders and want them to race in the same class, you'll need to have a separate operator for each sander in that specific class.) This prevents the possibility of someone having  to race themselves for the championship of a class.

- Race Official's decision is final.

- At the Race Official's discretion, a heat may be re-played if an unfair situation occurred.

Power Source:

- Belt sanders shall be powered only by 120V single phase electricity supplied at the track.

- Only extension cords supplied by the Buckland Fire Department for this event may be used to power contestant's entries.

Track:

- Belt sanders must be capable of operation on a plywood track between wooden side walls 7 3/4" inches apart (inside measurement) and 2" inches in height.

- The track is 30' feet from starting line to finish line.  There is room before the starting line to coil the extension cord (provided at the beginning of each race) and about 15' feet for stopping after the finish line.  There is also foam (or other suitable stopping material) at the end of the track for those who just can't stop.

Winning:

- The first sander to cross the finish line is declared the winner of that heat.

- Any sander that fails to reach the finish line due to causes such as tipping over, cord entanglement, cord separation, or sander power switch error or failure, will be considered the loser of that heat.

- Should both belt sanders fail to reach the finish line, the belt sander that came closest to the finish line before "stalling" will be considered the winner of that heat.

Belts and Grit:

- Belt sanders of all classes must use a belt of commercially manufactured abrasive cloth or paper as their sole means of locomotion.

- Studs, chains, or other foreign objects in or on the belt are forbidden and will cause that belt sander to be disqualified.

Energy Storage Devices:

- Energy storage devices shall be defined as springs, flywheels, compressed gas tanks, chemical energy storage devices such as batteries and rocket motors, and electrical energy storage devices such as capacitors and inductors.

- No belt sander shall have any energy storage device on board that is charged or loaded at the start of the race with the following exceptions:  Springs used to tension or steer or guide belts, motor brush springs, spring of cushion couplings in drive train, springs in trigger or electrical switches, springs used for suspension, and springs used to guide the sander or bear on track walls.

Interference:

- No sander or entrant may interfere with another sander's progress along the track.

- Interference includes, but is not limited to the following:  touching, unplugging, turning power off, launching of projectiles, and the introduction of obstacles or foreign substances to the track.

- Any heat in which interference has taken place shall be run again with the original track assignments and the old results replaced with the new.

- In the case that one of the contestants intentionally caused the interference, that contestant will be struck from the list of the contestants and disqualified from racing.

Pyrotechnics:

- Devices using combustion such as rocket motors, smoke generators and pyrotechnics are absolutely prohibited on or in a belt sander participating in all classes in all races.

Disruptive or Endangering Behavior:

- Any person engaging in disruptive or dangerous behavior will be required to leave the race area.

Liability:

-The Buckland Fire Department, NAPA Auto Parts and/or First Call Auto Supply Inc., are not responsible for any injuries to contestants or to spectators.

- The Buckland Fire Department, NAPA Auto Parts and/or First Call Auto Supply Inc., are not responsible for any damage to property.
